If youre serious about success, then you need to improve your recovery
If youre serious about success, then you need to improve your recoveryIf youre serious about success, then you need to improve your recoveryWhen you study the lives of people who are the best in the world at what they do, youll notice one consistent themeRecovery.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn aninterview, Mike Mancias, performance coach for basketball icon LeBron James, told Tim Ferriss, Recovery never stops. Thats the key to LeBrons success. Its the key to Olympian Michael Phelps success as well. What do I mean by recovery?Recovery is organizing the rest of your life to ensure you perform at your highest level. In other words, what Michael Phelps did while he wasnt swimming was the reason he was so good at swimming. What LeBron James does while he isnt playing basketball is why hes so good at basketball.Focusing on recovery is hard for two reasonsWe can be impulsive, thinkin g mora work is better, so we just become workaholics. Our recovery isnt actually recovery, but a low-level distraction from what really matters in our livesMore Is Not BetterLets start with the first reason. Working more to get ahead eventually leads to a diminishing of returns. Its like trying to cut a tree down with an increasingly dull saw.Recovery is sharpening your saw so that youre effective while working. But recovery is also about gaining clarity so that youre cutting down the right tree.Heres how Abraham Lincoln felt about recoveryGive me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe. - Abraham LincolnSee what I mean?Abraham Lincoln believed that two-thirds of his attention should be spent on his recovery. My guess, if you really looked closer, is that 80% or more of Lincolns attention was on recovery. Its not about chopping down more trees. Its about cutting down the right trees. For example, I see people writing and publishing blog posts ev ery day. But none of these people are ever going to become professional writers in the strict sense. They will always be mediocre novices. Their work isnt getting any better. They arent thinking any bigger about what theyre doing. Theyre thinking incredibly small. Thus a big, big part of recovery is the thinking and imaginative process. What is it you actually want to do?Is what youre currently doing the best approach?Should you be so focused on output or should you direct your attention more toward results? What type of results would constitute success for you?How could you get 10X the results with 10X less effort? What are the 10% or 20% of activities youre currently doing that are producing 80% or more of your results? How can you delete almost everything youre doing and focus on what really matters? How can you produce less but impact more?Focus, Not RepetitionYou see people go to the gym several times per week for years and never truly become healthier or stronger. In the bookTurning Pro, Steven Pressfield said,Addictions embody repetition without progress.Repetition without progress is what happens when youre working with a dull blade. Its what happens when you are a dull blade. You need clear goals that are outcome-focused. When you become very clear about the specific results you want in your life, then you focus on recovery. You focus on figuring out what really works. You stop just doing more, more, more in an impulsive and wishful manner. You actually sit down and think aboutWhat do you really want? Why do you want it?Why are you currently getting the results youre getting?Whats working?Whats not working? How can you improve what is working? How can you eliminate whats not?True RecoveryWherever you are, thats where you should be. - Dan Sullivan, founder of Strategic CoachTrue recovery is about rejuvenation. Its about being present with where you are. Most people are rarely present these days. When theyre at work, theyre distracted. They fight off their self-pres cribed ADHD with stimulants to keep them going. When they arent working, theyre on their phone impulsively. Theyre checking emails, notifications, and being anywhere but where their body is.Fasting is a form of recovering your body from food intake. While fasting, your body can actually heal itself because, for a brief window of time, its not focused on digestion. Fasting from technology regularly is essential for clarity.Bill Gates is famous for taking one week off per year solely for the purpose of thinking. He calls this his think week. During this think week, he justs read articles, meditates, visualizes, and thinks about Microsoft. Most of the big innovations and ideas for Microsoft came during those think weeks.Bill Gates gave himself time off. He gave himself time to reflect and renew. It was during those few moments of connection with himself and his thinking that he created something that not only changed the world but made him - for a time - the wealthiest person in the world.Recovery is about results. Its about looking at your life and thinking aboutWhat is low-level?What is below the standards of my goals? What is below the standards of the results Im seeking? How can you expect to truly be amazing at what you do if the rest of your life is a mess? How can you expect to be professional if most of your time is spent living like a novice? How you train and practice reflects what happens in the game.Dan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach - which is the 1 entrepreneurial coaching program in the world - has found that for an entrepreneur to 10X their revenue, they must massively decrease their time spent working.Ideally, you spend 35%-40% of your days totally off from work. That would be between 127 and 146 days per year not working. For Dan, its not a free day if you check your email. Its not a free day if youre thinking about work. Its not a free day if youre not totally present recovering.Heres what youll find The people who are most successful do the most memorable and enjoyable things while not working. People who are average at what they do spend their time on average things while not working. Theyre watching the news or consuming low-level media. Those who are successful spend their time off with family, or traveling, or learning, or having powerful experiences, or engaging in real hobbies. The quality of your recovery reflects the quality of your life.ConclusionLook at your results over the past six to 12 months. Are you actually getting better at what youre doing? If youve been going to the gym, can you actually see the results? Is your body different? When it comes to your business, are you actually making more moneyWhen it comes to your lifestyle, are you actually seeing gains? If youre not improving as much as you could be, then youre not recovering enough or well enough.Youre not focused on quality. Youre not focused on results. But when you really get serious about results, then youll do everything you can to improve your performance. And improving your performance is all about the setup and design. Its about what youre doing while youre not at work. Its about what youre doing while youre not at the gym. Its about taking the long-term view of where youre going. Its about thinking big enough to become elite at what you do, rather than maintaining the amateur perspective.Theres a reason most people remain mediocre amateurs at what they do. Theres a reason that 3% of any given field make over 90% of the money. Theres a reason 3% of the blog posts are read by 90% of the people. Are you actually getting better? How big are your goals? How can you 10X what youre doing? How can you spend your time most effectively? Those are questions you must ask if you want to see huge results. Those are questions you must answer if youre going to get paid big for what you do.Stop being an amateur. Become a professional.Become the best in the world at what you do. Become so good your work cant be ignored.Do stuff thats rare, unique, and valuable - not that which is easily replicable.Have the vision to think big enough. This article first appeared on Medium.

How to convince your boss to let you see the eclipse
How to convince your babo to let you binnenbinnensee the eclipseHow to convince your boss to let you see the eclipseOn Monday, a rare natural phenomenon is coming to the United States. As the moon, Earth, and sun align, the moon will completely block out the sun, casting a shadow on parts of the Earth and causing a total solar eclipse that will be seen from Oregon to South Carolina.Everyone in the U.S. will at least see a partial solar eclipse, but to fully experience it, youll have to be in the 70-mile-wide path of totality that 14 states will be in. You can figure out how much of the eclipse youll see by checking out this interactive map.Although the total solar eclipse will last only a few minutes at maximum, some employers may not see the big deal. So the sky is darkening? OK, get back to work.If your skeptical co-workers say so what? you can tell them so this. Eclipses are a rare moment of cosmic serendipity that can raise good will amongst employees and create memories that wil l last beyond this auffhrung. Here are a few ways you can convince your boss and your company you need to take a few minutes offto see this eclipseIts awe-inspiringIf youre on the fence about taking a break to watch the moon block the sun, let an astronomer whomLadders talked with convince you. Dr. Jay Pasachoff, an astronomer at Williams College who has seen 33 total solar eclipses, calls seeing a total solar eclipse an unforgettable experience. To be in totality is complete inspiring in that these dramatic phenomena arouse a primal fear that the sun is being extinguished in the middle of the day, he said.As Annie Dillard explained in her 1982 essay on seeing a total solar eclipse, the event is so mind-blowing, it can inspire screams.People on all the hillsides, including, I think, myself, screamed when the black body of the moon detached from the sky and rolled over the sun, she wrote. This was the universe about which we have read so much and never before felt the universe as a clo ckwork of loose spheres flung at stupefying, unauthorized speeds. But whats the value for those not in the path of totality? Admittedly, watching a partial eclipse is not exciting at all, Pasachoff said. But it is interesting a little bit to look through a filter and see that theres a bite out of the sun and that it changes very slowly over a couple of hours. But really if you can, go see a total solar eclipse over a partial one, he said. Its like putting your family in a car and going 70 percent of the way to Disney World. Its just disappointing that you havent gone all the way and youve missed the main event, Pasachoff said about seeing a partial eclipse. Youre not inside the theme park unless youre in totality. It will be a very long time until the next oneIf youre in the path of totality, this eclipse will last no longer than about two minutes, 40 seconds. It shouldnt be that hard of a sell to take a break thats shorter than your average lunch break. But if you miss the 2017 total so lar eclipse, youll have to wait until 2024 to see it again in the U.S.If youre in a place of totality on Monday, realize that youre very lucky. It takes 375 years for a total solar eclipse to occur again in the same spot on average. It could be a community-building event for the officeIf the science of an eclipse is somehow uninteresting, take a look at the business incentives to take part in one.Manyhave said that they feel like theres no time in our workday for breaks or vacations. But taking a break away from our desks is good for our body and mind. Research has found that frequent breaks are key to being successful in the office. And if you think you cant mix work and play? Think again. One study found that people who did an enjoyable activity right before working reported just as much enjoyment as the group who had fun after work.Eclipses are a special event that can inspire awe and cheer just by having people looking up. This is a low-cost, big-win scenario. The amount of good wi ll youll get from letting your employees see this event for 20 minutes will strengthen your bond with them and improve your bottom-line, Pasachoff said.Do you want to be remembered as the boss who stopped your employees from seeing a breathtaking site of nature that may only be seen once in their lifetime? Think wisely.

How to Ask for a Job Recommendation
How to Ask for a Job RecommendationHow to Ask for a Job RecommendationWhen you are job searching, being able to provide solid employment recommendations is always important. Asking the right people in the most effective way for a reference can greatly impact the ultimate quality of your recommendations, and help you get hired. Be Selective About Who You Ask for a Recommendation The most important step is to make sure that youchoose enthusiastic supportersas reference givers. Not just any colleague or friend will do. In fact, a common mistake is subtly pressuring reluctant writers. Trying to convince someone who is leid comfortable writing a job recommendation for you can be a mistake when youre furnishing confidential references. You really wont know exactly what theyre saying or writing about you and your qualifications for the job. However, badgering someone who is hesitant to help you out can also backfire when you get to see the recommendation theyre writing, even when it app ears to be positive. That sounds strange, because youd think that any positive recommendation would be good. But heres why thats not true employers will oftenfollow up with your references. The employer may ask probing questions during a conversation that could reveal damaging information from the reference givers who may have doubts about your qualifications but didnt want to mention them in writing. So, the best strategy is to give your prospective reference writers an out. Let them know that youre looking to assemble a strong set of recommendations and ask if they are comfortable supplying a highly positive reference. If they are, then great, but if not, let them go with a simple, thanks anyway. Use Email to Request a Recommendation When asking someone to recommend you, send them an email request. This way reluctant writers can carefully choose the wording for their response and dont have to look you in the eye in order to decline. You might ask, Do you know me in a way that would allow you to write a really positive recommendation? With your initial request, you should also mention that youll provide some additional background information to help should they choose to write for you. Not sure what exactly to write? Here are sample email letters and messagesasking for a recommendation. What Type of Information to Provide to Your References When a prospective reference writer confirms an interest in acting as a reference for you, its important that you provide them with as much information as possible. Dont leave the writer floundering and trying to figure out the job youre applying for or why exactly youd be so good at it. Heres a look at some of the type of information that might be helpful for your recommendation writer to have 1.A copy of your resume. Thiswill provide the person giving you the recommendation a comprehensive summary of your background. Even someone who knows you well will benefit from being able to review your resume. 2.A copy of your cover letter. If the person is writing the recommendation for a specific job, this is crucial information. Your cover letter will show the recommendation writer how youre framing your case, and might spur him or her to build upon some of the themes youve presented. 3. The address of your LinkedIn profile. This is especially important if youve included some highly laudatory recommendations and skill endorsements on your profile. Your recommender may be even mora comfortable praising you after seeing these positive comments. 4.A detailed summary of the job duties and accomplishments. Of course, you want to focus on the responsibilitiesand accomplishments that relate to your work. This information can help your recommendation writer to be more specific and convincing when he or she writes for you. This will be especially useful if some time has passed since you worked together. 5.A copy of the job advertisement. The more information the writer has the better. Giving him or her a c opy of the job posting and description can help him or her see what the employer is expecting from the prospective employee. That way he or she can tailor the reference to the specific position. 6.Acopy of your personal statement. This isnt so much for a job recommendation, but it may be important and helpful if youre applying for graduate school. If youve written a thesis statement for your job search, share that as well.

How to be resilient when times get tough
How to be resilient when times get toughHow to be resilient when times get toughAs proof that weve become a society of wimps, take this into consideration new research confirms that when we run out of legitimate threats to face, we begin to call things that we judged to be harmless in the past as now a threat. The study was undertaken in an effort to understand how legitimate victims of violence have been marginalized so that wimps can use the genau violence to describe any time they feel uncomfortable.Remember the old days when trauma meant someone had been genuinely hurt, often so severely they could no longer function? Now an unpleasant encounter, an aggressive look, or an offensive word can hurl wimps into such a conundrum that they need to landseek out a safe place where they can simper until they have the strength to face the real world.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraIn an effort to be kind to these crybabies, researchers refer to the malady that affects certain segments of ur population as concept creep. The more comfortable a society becomes, the more small indiscretions and problems are morphed into huge obstacles in ur mind.Shit happens. Life is hard. Pain is inevitable. Growth is optional- LaRae QuyMost of ur emotions, like gratitude and compassion, can be developed when things are going good. To develop resilience, however, you need to get knocked down, and more than once. Over time, the more times youre knocked down, the easier it becomes to climb back onto your feet because each time you do, you become stronger, smarter, and less afraid to get knocked down again.Resilient people dont become successful in spite of their trauma they become successful because of it. None of us look forward to trauma in our life, but its a fact of life. Pretending that it wont happen is not a practical approach. Most of us live through at least five or six traumat ic events in our lifetime- we lose someone we love, get divorced, lose a job, experience a serious illness- the list goes on. If we survive these events, we come out stronger and wiser.Trauma does not have to destroy us. Studies show that 90% of people who experience a traumatic event also experience at least one form of personal growth in the following months and years if they have the right mindset.Attitude is that little thing that makes all the difference- Winston ChurchillThe key is to approach challenges and obstacles in ways that will grow resilience. Here are 5 ways to be resilient when times get tough1. Pay Attention To Negative EmotionsTheres so much emphasis on happiness these days that its skewered our understanding of life in the real world. Were told we need to learn how to increase positive emotions and decrease negative ones. Positive thinking is a cornerstone of mental toughness, but its not a free pass to bury our head in the sand about the crap that shows up in li fe so we can pretend it doesnt exist.Resilient people realize negative emotions are completely normal and healthy, so they pay attention to them. The problem isnt that we experience them the problem rears its ugly head when were taught to suppress them or avoid them at all cost.Remember, negative emotions surface for a reason. All emotions can be useful the key is to regulate them so you can choose the situations which are more beneficial to youDont fool yourself into thinking that if you suppress negative emotions youre emotionally healthy. You can wear an emotional diaper and hope things will clean up by themselves, but guess what? When you fight a feeling, it only gets stronger. Scientific studies show that the key is to form a positive framework around the negative emotion. How To Make It Work For You Its not always possible to turn away from disturbing or unfavorable situations but dont ignore negative emotions in hopes theyll go away. To counter them its important to 1) acknowl edge the emotion, and 2) name it for what it is even if its unflattering- especially if its unflattering. Keep it to a couple of words, though, because if you enter into a dialogue about the negative emotion, you give it the opportunity to take root and become even more powerful.2. Dont Stop Because It Hurts A LittleMillions of dollars are spent on self-help books, therapists, and drugs in an attempt to outrun adversity and the pain that comes with it. Heads up, folks- pain is part of the human condition and the sooner you embrace this fact of life, the more content youll be.Resilience is a akin to a muscle. You can sit on your butt all day, watch TV, and eat potato chips. Or, you can exercise, strengthen your bones, and improve circulation. Our brain works in much the same way so its your choice to either take the steps to build a strong mind, or let it decay into a pity puddle where youre too precious to be inconvenienced by something as mundane as pain.Did I mention wimps?Every d ecision you make in life comes down to this are you willing to embrace the pain that comes with the pursuit of things that matter to you? The pursuit of happiness is the active avoidance of growth and maturity. Its childish to believe self-righteous bullshit that justifies your temper tantrums and rage because the world is not perfect- as you see it.Dont be afraid of your fears. Theyre not there to scare you. Theyre there to let you know that something is worth it C. JoyBell C.How To Make It Work For You Dont avoid pain instead, manage your response to it. Be a graceful and strong beacon for how to navigate the depths of your emotions with success. The pain that travels with adversity will produce virtues like bravery, integrity, and humility. Since pain is a universal truth, be smart enough to learn and grow from lifes experiences. All that is required of you is to discover the value and meaning behind it.3. Success Is Not For The Faint-HeartedOur culture glorifies frailty. Psychi atrist Steven Wolin suggests that theres an entire industry that turns people into victims by having them dwell on the traumas in their life rather than grow stronger from them.Resilience is not the ability to escape unscathed. Resilient people have the scars of warfare. They struggle like everyone else.Neuroscience research shows theres only one real way to deal with fear you need to face it, head on. As an FBI agent, I was taught to think Im scared, but I can learn from this. It will make me stronger.Lets get one thing straight- everyone feels uncomfortable when they move toward the threat or obstacle in front of them, but its one of the fruchtwein effective ways to build both resilience and confidence.Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom- Viktor E. FranklHow To Make It Work For You Name your fear. Your ability to experience and describe your emotions with a high level of accuracy is indicative of how you can leverage them. Being fearless doesnt mean eliminating fear it means you know how to manage it.4. Question The CatastropheWhen we dont get our way, whether it be an election or a promotion, many of us spiral into a sense of catastrophe. Were overcome with a sense of hopelessness. We exaggerate the effect of something negative in our life and imagine our entire life is about to fall apart. If we dont question the catastrophe, we give our imagination permission to expect the worst possible outcome in a situation. While its smart to be aware of possible negative outcomes, when we assume the worst will happen we set ourselves up for unnecessary stress. The catastrophic thoughts themselves arent the real problem its that if were not careful, we can really buy into them. When we do, we experience these thoughts as facts. If we allow ourselves to believe our thoughts are true, we get caught up in them and are no longer present to life in the here and now. Bam We throw resilience out the window, roll over, and play victim.Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win- Sun TzuHow To Make It Work For You Catastrophizing is simply letting our negative thoughts take control. Instead, observe the negative thoughts as they come, and as they go. Each time you acknowledge a negative thought, and exercise control over it, you develop resilience. It takes courage to look inwardly into the darkest part of your personality. We all contain bits of light and dark we all contain bits of gold and lead.5. Put A Different Label On Your SituationOften, we can be more resilient if we simply reframe our situation. Emotions like anger and fear are both freighted with energy so, rather than express them in a negative way, channel them into a more positive one. Is it a lump of coal, or is it a diamond in the making? It takes skill to manage our emotions and we get better at it with time and prac tice. The same goes for the way we relabel our situation. If we let the energy from our emotions decide our actions, we wont always cultivate behavior that will best serve us.How To Make It Work For You Research in neuroplasticity has shown us that we can literally re-wire our brain and be more resilient when we change the way we think about a challenge. When we simply put different optics on our situation, we can change the way we think about it.This article first appeared on LaraeQuy.com

Job Interview Question How Do You Stay Organized
Job Interview Question How Do You Stay OrganizedJob Interview Question How Do You Stay OrganizedIf youve been job searching, no matter what the role is, youve probably seen the line excellent organizational skills or can juggle multiple projects at once. With this being a key skill needed for so many jobs, a common interview question is, How do you stay organized? Here are some tips to answer this question the best way possible and stand out as a stellar candidate for the position1. You have a specific ordnungsprinzipEveryone has some type of structure in which they complete their daily to-dos. It doesnt have to be complicated, actually the simpler the better. Think about how you accomplished your tasks this week. Did you review everything at the beginning of the week and prioritize? Do you prioritize by deadline or how important a task is? Do you use Evernote to plan your week, or do you like to write and color-code everything on a master calendar? Articulate your system in a few sen tences that show you have a thoughtful way of keeping all of your responsibilities in order.ExampleI keep track of everything using Google Calendar. I like to fill out big projects on the monthly view, then at the start of every week I like to plan what needs to be done. At the end of every day, I see what I accomplished and add any new tasks that popped up during the day.2. Your system is flexibleInterviewers like that youre able to stay organized even when something unexpected happens. Even if they dont specifically ask how your organizational system is flexible, you should still include that you arent stuck if an unanticipated task is thrown your way.ExampleBecause I review what I need to do at the end of every day, Im able to re-prioritize quickly if Im given a new urgent task during the day.3. Give an example of your system in actionThe way you stand out with this question is giving a specific example in your career where you put your system to work, something unexpected came u p and you were able to handle it well. Having a particular time when you had to use your organization skills will show that youre confident in your abilities and will impress the part interviewing you.ExampleWhen I worked at ACME Software I had to organize all of the logistics for a conference at the end of the month. I had all of the deadlines planned out on Google Calendar. Two weeks before the conference, we had to do a rush order 1,000 more brochures for one of our products. Since I was on time with all of the other responsibilities for the conference it was easy for me to order the extra 1,000 brochures without neglecting my other tasks.Like all answers to interview questions, try to be concise while still being as detailed as possible. Since you prepared for the question, youll be more likely to answer it confidently and with ease. Just take the time to figure out your system and an example, and the delivery will be a piece of cake.
Land the Job With These 4 Executive Summary Tips
Land the Job With These 4 Executive Summary Tips Land the Job With These 4 Executive Summary Tips Youâve heard the job search aphorism that a recruiter only spends five seconds on average scanning a resume before deciding if a candidate moves forward or not. Besides having a polished resume, what else do you need to improve your chances? An executive summary. An executive summary on your resume is similar to your âhighlight reelâ or what you would write on your LinkedIn profile summary. Itâs a concise couple of sentences that highlight your special skills and accomplishments positioned at the top of your resume. So when a recruiter does their five-second scan, theyâll have a clear picture of who you are and why youâre a good fit for the position and the company. How is an executive summary different from an objective statement? An objective statement is a line on your resume explaining the type of role youâre searching for and what youâre looking for in a job. It is considered outdated by todayâs recruiters because it focuses on what the candidate wants for themselves, not the value they can bring to the company. An executive summary is different because it sums up your professional achievements and skills into a value proposition on how you can contribute to the company. Here are some dos and donâts on creating the executive summary that will land you an interview: DO use a few keywords from the job description A lot of resumes submitted through a companyâs website go through a computer scan, which is the first test before getting into a recruiterâs hands. Fit keywords into your summary as organically as possible, but donât overdo it. Copying and pasting every skill from the job description may get you past a computer, but once an actual human scans it theyâll snuff out your copy-and-paste game and immediately dump your resume into the recycle bin. DONâT be vague Like the rest of your resume, being vague in your executive summary will only make you look like you havenât accomplished anything. A recruiter wants to find a good fit with the qualities listed in the job listing, but you still want to make yourself stand out with an interesting fact or accomplishment. Avoid overly-used phrases such as âresults-drivenâ and âextremely organized.â Instead of âresults-driven,â use an example such as, âAmbitious sales associate who exceeded quarterly goals by 50% for the past year.â DO keep it short A quality executive summary can be expressed in three to five sentences. Think of it as the â30-second elevator pitchâ on your resumeexcept itâs written and you only have five seconds. It should highlight what makes you a good fit but also pulls the recruiter in so they want to read the whole resume and eventually call you in for an interview. DONâT be boring Depending on the role youâre applying for, be creative with how you present your executive summary. If youâre looking for a design role, you would want to present your summary in the most visually appealing way possible. If youâre searching for a role where you need to be more conservative with resume layout, such as financial services, use vivid details that will paint the image you want to present of yourself. Research different executive summary samples online. Take your favorite aspects and verbiage from different ones and create an executive summary that makes most sense for you and the type of job you want.

How Recruiters Really Read Your Resume
How Recruiters Really Read Your Resume How Recruiters Really Read Your Resume Over the past few years, thereâs been a lot of talk about the â6-second ruleâ after the Ladders showed that recruiters skim a resume for an average of 6 seconds before making a decision. Then, applicant tracking systems (ATS) and their automated scores and filters entered into the mix, causing job seekers to chase their tails on the hunt for the right resume writing strategy. The key is learning how your information may be interpreted by both the ATS and the human reader. As a former corporate recruiter with 15 years of experience in nonprofit, banking, and manufacturing industries, Iâve used several different ATS to review, parse, and reject resumes. Hereâs a little secret: not all companies use automated scoring as a method for screening resumes. There is no one way to read a resume Several different factors go into how your resume is interpreted by the reader a recruiter, hiring manager, or both. Volume of applications is one determining factor in the length of time a hiring representative has to dedicate to actually reading a resume. For any given vacancy, I would easily review upwards of 100+ resumes, which didnât leave a lot of time for reading resumes word for word. Many of these resumes were skimmed via a mobile device as I waited for lunch or binged on reality TV before winding down for some shut-eye. After years in the recruiting industry, I learned that hiring managers often spent quite a bit longer reviewing an ideal candidateâs resume than a recruiter. Grabbing the recruiterâs attention at the first touch is the goal. How I decided which resumes made the cut Hereâs a peek into what I looked for when reviewing resumes. First-glance method Upon opening the resume, I often made a split decision concerning a job seekerâs candidacy. I paid close attention to the candidateâs contact information. I needed to know who I could be speaking with, their location, and how quickly I could reach them (via phone or email, etc.). Location was a deal breaker for certain positions since familiarity with the territory was crucial to an employeeâs success. I urge job seekers to stop right now and proofread your contact info. Donât miss opportunities because youâve transposed your phone number. If youâre a career changer, willing to relocate, or have an employment gap, youâll especially want to include a cover letter. Recruiters may refer to cover letters to uncover more about the candidateâs career story. As a candidate, your job is to make the recruiterâs job easier. Grab this personâs attention and lead their eyes to the quality information necessary to determine your fit for the role. When this information was nicely formatted with bolding or shading, it influenced me to spend more time reviewing the document. Iâd then do a quick scan to assess the resume length. Anything longer than 2 pages and containing wall-to-wall text, jumbled design techniques, or functional formatting didnât make it far. Functional resumes arenât totally a negative but many times they raise more concerns than they resolve. Someone in career transition may be tempted to use a functional format, and in many cases, there can be a positive outcome. However, job seekers must keep in mind that functional resumes force recruiters to piece together which skills or achievements correlate with what job - and itâs not always simple to gauge how much experience a candidate has from a bulleted list of competencies. Functional resumes also donât fare well with the ATS. If at all possible, opt for drawing a parallel between your transferable skills and the requirements in the job posting instead. As for length, your resume is your career brochure, not your autobiography. Reel the hiring representatives in with your relevant career synopsis and stay on task with the focus of the job posting. Your resume is your career brochure, not your autobiography.Ashley Watkins Key requirements After the first glance of a resume, I soaked in the details of âthe top thirdâ of the resume. This space on your resume is prime real estate. Be sure to make this portion of your resume keyword-rich, high-impact, and ready to sell. Objective statements are a thing of the past so your career summary should clearly communicate who you are, what you do, and how you add value to the team or organization. From there, I evaluated whether a candidate met the qualifications. I verified fit through education, licenses, certifications, and job titles. Even if you havenât completed your degree or certification, add it to your resume and list an expected completion date. At some point, youâll cross paths with a hiring manager willing to make an exception and hire you under the stipulation that you have this must-have requirement completed at a certain point after your hire date. Relevant job titles offer bonus points too. If a past title doesnât match the posting but your job function is spot on, consider using a slash title (Outside Sales/Operations Manager) to better explain the scope of what you did and emphasize relevant keywords. Check to see if you have the right keywords and titles in your resume right here: Association memberships, industry awards and community involvement were also nice touches to include on your resume. Include accomplishments Next, I wanted to see quantifiable achievements. This didnât always mean numbers. View your achievement bullets as selling points to guide the interview discussion. Recruiters will look for examples of how youâve saved money, repaired declining relationships, or increased revenue. By listing high-impact accomplishments, you can quickly demonstrate your contribution to bottom-line results. When candidates did this successfully, I already had an idea of potential salary offer amounts, fit with company culture, and a strategy for selling this candidate to my hiring team. Disqualifiers In case you havenât figured it out by now, the recruiterâs job is to rule you out, not into, consideration. Quite a bit of time will be spent narrowing down a pool of resumes, so recruiters can only present the best-qualified slate of candidates to the hiring manager. The recruiterâs job is to rule you out, not in.Ashley Watkins Certain red flags are a surefire way to land yourself into the no pile, including omitting dates, having excessive employment gaps, or frequent job changes. Whenever I received a resume with no employment dates or location, I immediately felt as though the applicant was hiding something. Iâd share my concerns with the hiring team and was advised on many occasions to move forward with interviews. It never failed that upon further investigation, the candidate would have some out-of-this-world interview story to tell which yielded a rejection letter shortly after that. Attempting to camouflage dates by using the years-only format wonât always work. By using the years-only format, you can add some time onto your short-lived job stint or take away valuable credit for your job history. For example, if you worked somewhere from January 2005 until December 2006 and youâve used the years-only format (2005-2006), it appears that you have 1 year of experience when you really have 2 years. To ensure ATS compatibility, use the month-year format for your dates. As stated previously, explain employment gaps in your cover letter. When possible, fill the gaps by listing volunteer roles, student responsibilities, or consulting work on the resume to keep the recruiterâs eyes on the resume as long as possible to eliminate the need to stop and refer to the cover letter for answers. The extras You would think it goes without saying but grammar and spelling errors have been and always will be big turn-offs. Be sure to proofread every line in your documents before submitting. I would suggest having someone else give your information a second look. When youâve reviewed the same information repeatedly, itâs easy to see what should be there and not whatâs actually there. Most job seekers donât consider an email address as an obstacle. However, using an AOL, Yahoo, or cable/internet provider email address can give the impression that youâre outdated or not as tech-savvy as the potential employer desires. Also, some older email service providers have subpar spam filters. I canât tell you how many applicants were furious about not being selected to interview for my open positions, only to find out theyâd never responded to several emails Iâd sent them concerning completing assessments. Stick with Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, or an email connected to your personal domain. Also, if you havenât personalized your LinkedIn URL, now would be a good time to add another layer of professionalism. Related articles: What Do Corporate Recruiters Want? Setting the Right Social Media Strategy for Your Job Search
Setting the Right Social Media Strategy for Your Job Search Setting the Right Social Media Strategy for Your Job Search 5 simple guidelines to help you market your skills and network online.Social media is here to stay, like it or not. The âBig 4â social media players of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube have become tightly intertwined with our personal and professional lives and completely transformed the news media.Millions of people worldwide use some sort of social media channel on a daily, if not hourly, basis to stay in touch with friends and family or to promote their businesses. Social media is becoming increasingly important as a critical method by which to market their skills and network online. To the novice social media user, it can be overwhelming to decide how and where to start interacting online. If your goal is to conduct a successful job search through social media, then anxiety levels can increase for even the most learned user. The good news is that there are some simple guidelines to adhere to when embarking upon how to use social media to secure your dream position.1. Re member Your AudienceA savvy individual always keeps his audience in mind when searching for and communicating with target individuals and organizations. Your time to devote to social media will be limited during the job search process; therefore, it is essential to determine where your audience âlivesâ online and apply your resources accordingly.Your audience might be former colleagues, HR representatives and executives of ideal employers, current and past clients, alumni connections or professional organizations. You may even determine social media isnât the quickest path to employment because your fellow professionals only hire from within or rub elbows at industry conferences. If thatâs the case then you have just saved yourself time and effort. However, for the vast majority of todayâs candidates, an appealing profile and a smart strategy will bolster your search.2. Match Your Audience to a Social Media ChannelItâs easy to feel compelled to be all things to all peopl e on all social media mediums. This is not the easy road because an effective social media strategy - versus merely hanging up your Internet shingle - takes more time and energy than you might think. The practical strategy is to begin with the one channel that is most germane to your search, reach a level of proficiency or mastery through proven traction with contacts and then decide if you can take on another social media outlet. To help simplify your social media selection, weâve created a concise overview of the leading social media platforms and what they offer in your job search. Consider your career aspirations and then analyze the opportunities to create with social media. Click on the image above to see the full-size version of our social media overview.3. Build a Professional PresenceThere is an art and a science to building a professional presence online. Here are some basic tips for launching your profile: Career head shot - clean background, nicely groomed hair, business attire Concise overview - quick and impactful statement of your skills and value Compelling content - keep it relevant to your professional field and remember to not post anything youâll regret later Contact information - e-mail (avoid embarrassing or cute names), phone and listing of any other social media channels such as your Twitter handle Community player - start interacting through posts, applications and connections as soon as you feel comfortable; no time to waste! 4. Make a CommitmentOnce you have built a professional presence online, the key to your success will be an ongoing commitment to tend to your profile, participate in the online community and be an avid adopter of new technological improvements from social media providers, such as Facebookâs new Timeline.5. Critique and Measure Your ProgressSocial media can be fun, educational and a great community builder. However, if your goal is to supplement your job search, then you must periodically evaluate your effectiveness online. Go ahead and ask a few close and not-so-close contacts what they think of your profile. This informal âauditâ process will provide valuable feedback to boost your presence. Also, set specific goals for your search. For example, on Twitter you might want to Tweet three to five times per day, have 300 people follow you and get âReTweetedâ once per week. The beauty of social media is that itâs incredibly measurable and there are tools such as Klout that can help you quickly surmise how much power you wield. To know that youâre on the right track with your job search, take note of how many new and valuable contacts you are making, how many âcoffeesâ you are arranging with leads and how many interviews you are securing through your online efforts. The real proof, of course, will be to land the perfect job.Good luck with your search and enjoy the benefits of social media!Editorâs note: This is the first in a series on using social media to best advantage in the job search.

Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires
Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires Sweet, Fermented, Sustainable Tires Your car runs on fossil fuels in more ways than one. Yes, you fill it up with gas to get you from here to there, but the tires on which the vehicle rolls are made predominantly from fossil fuels. But future tires neednt be true environmentallyunfriendly, say researchers from the University of Minnesotas departments of chemical and materials engineering and the University of Massachusetts at Amhersts chemical engineering department. That team has come up with a way to make automobile tires from organic matter, including trees, grasses, and corn. The process just might shift the tire production industry toward the use of renewable resources, says Paul Dauenhauer, a University of Minnesota associate professor of chemical engineering and materialsscience. This research could have a big impact on the multi-billion dollar automobile tires industry, says Dauenhauer, who led the research. But it neednt disrupt automotive producers and car drivers. The sustainably made tires would be able to fit existing and future automotiveaxles the same way current tires do. In other words, vehicle owners would still head to the tire store or automotive dealership to have new tires mounted. In fact, drivers probably wouldnt even notice between conventionally produced and so-called green tires. The biomass-produced car tires would be identical to existing car tires, with the same chemical makeup, color (they wouldnt really be green), shape and performance expectations, Dauenhauer says. Catalytic conversion of biomass-derived chemicals to renewable polymers occurs in laboratory stirred-tank reactors. Image: University of Minnesota The method could also have an effect on the way other rubber-based products are made. Perhaps they too could be more sustainably produced using the same or similar process, he adds. The key to the whole tire-production processwhether biomass or traditionally producedis isoprene, the key molecule in car tires. The researchers wanted to find a way to produce it from the natural products found in many peoples backyards. For decades, tires companies have been looking for ways to produce isoprene from organic matter, Dauenhauer says. Today, chemists make isoprene by breaking petroleum molecules via a thermally driven process known as cracking. The isoprene is then separated from the hundreds of other chemicals produced by cracking and purified. Finally, chemical engineers cause the isoprene to react with itself. This results in the long chains that make up a solid polymer. That solid is the major component of car tires. Researchers believed there had to be a better way. Interest in finding one has risen in tandem with the increase in environmental consciousness. But most of those production efforts have been focused on fermentation, Dauenhauer says. That made sense, as Ethanol, a clean-energy-burning engine fuel and fuel additive, can be produced by the fermentation of sugars by yeasts. It can, for example, be produced from sugar cane. But isoprene proved a difficult molecule to generate from the microbes that resulted from fermentation. And efforts to make it by processes that didnt include fermentation havent succeeded, Dauenhauer says. Then, the Minnesota and Massachusetts researchers discovered a three-step process that combines biological fermentation with conventional catalytic refiningsimilar to the way petroleum is refinedcan work to create isoprene, he adds. The new process begins with sugars derived from the organic matter. In the first step, the sugars derived from the grasses, corn, and other matter are fermented to form whats called an intermediate, in this case itaconic acid. In the second step, itaconic acid and hydrogen are combined to form a chemical called methyl-THF (tetrahydrofuran). The third step is where the breakthrough occurs. In that step, methyl-THF is dehydrated to form isoprene. Using a catalyst recently discovered at the University of Minnesota, called P-SPP (Phosphorus Self-Pillared Pentasil), the team was able boost the reaction by up to 90 percent. Isoprene made up most of the resulting product. S-PPP surprised researchers with its ability to dramatically boost catalytic efficiency, Dauenhauer says. They had expected positive results, but not the 90 percent boost. Manufacturers could one day have that three-step process to thank for boosting U.S. tire production, says Frank Bates, a University of Minnesota professor of chemical engineering and materials science. Economically, biosourced isoprene could expand domestic production of car tires by using renewable, readily available resources instead of fossil fuels, Bates says. Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Economically, bio-sourced isoprene could expand domestic production of car tires by using renewable, readily available resources instead of fossil fuels. Seven Steps to a Robust Corporate Culture
Seven Steps to a Robust Corporate Culture Seven Steps to a Robust Corporate Culture Seven Steps to a Robust Corporate Culture Breeden, author of Tipping Sacred Cows (Jossey-Bass, 2013) The seven actions below can help ensure that leaders are excellent at the things that really matter. This is an energy conservation program that preserves a leaders best for the most meaningful actions, and encourages a bit of play along the way. And it helps leaders create a corporate culture that tolerates rough progress but insists on excellence in the end. 1.Lower the Stakes The first step for you to achieve excellence as a leader is to lower the stakes. Dont make everything you do a campaign for some larger group. If you want to hit the target, forget about the group youre part of. Excellence is a tough aim to achieve without trying to change a stereotype along the way. Remove any priming that reminds you of your membership in some negatively stereotyped group and narrow your focus to the task at hand. Do you want something youre working on to be really good? If so, ask yourself: Does it need to be good? Or are you just trying to prove that you need to be good? Is it about what the work needs, or what you need? 2.Ask Dumb Questions If you need to tackle the unhealthy desire to seem smart, hit it head on. Lead your team in a dumb-question lunch, where everyone asks the dumbest questions possible, with no eye-rolling allowed. As a leader you have a responsibility to create a safe place to experiment. That might mean clearing someones calendar and it might mean clearing someones conscience. Guilt can prevent playful exploration of new ideas and a sense of obligation can halt playful progress. 3.Embrace the Hacker Mentality Youre in a conference room listening to two people have the same debate for the sixth time. One says, Weve got to build this new system. The other one says, Yeah, but people will never use the system once we build it. You could delay the debate by asking the two workers to gather evidence or check in with other people. Or you could kill the debate by challenging the person who advocates the new system to leave the meeting and test a prototype of the system that afternoon. As the Old English proverb says, the shortest answer is doing the thing. (And there werent many software companies in Old England.) 4.Accept the Mess of Progress If youre not prepared to pay the price of a mess, youre not likely to get the benefits of progress. Progress is messy. Raise your tolerance for messes and youll make more progress. To bring others with you, youll need to share your mess, which can feel uncomfortable. But sharing a mess can be persuasive. As Baba Siv, a professor at Stanford said, I have observed time after time that if you build a polished prototype, others will see flaws. If you build a rough prototype, they will see potential. 5.Start a Meaningful Journey with a Meaningless Map Stumble. Bumble. Get over yourself. Burnish your brand as a leader by taking some public risks, smartly. Leaders who must cling to an excellent map to get started may stay stuck out in the cold. Planning is a healthy process to get a team on the same pages. But let your plan be a starting point, not a pair of handcuffs. 6.Embrace OK Is there a war in your head, between the urge to develop your people and the desire to produce an excellent outcome? Its a natural dilemma of leadership. I suggest this is a time to remember bold balance and say to both of those options. Let your people feel the powerful motivational force that you trust them to be OK in the moments of truth and theyll worry as much about excellence as you. If they dont then youve got the wrong person on your team, and you need to know that as soon as possible. Putting all the excellence on your own shoulders slows down development of your people and it prevents you from learning if they belong on your team. 7.Play Around Im not talking about occasional trips to the golf course or go-kart racing as a relief from the drudgery of the job. Im suggesting that work itself should involve less drudgery and should feel more like racing go-karts. And dont think playing is the province of unproductive children. As the very productive playwright George Bernard Shaw said, We dont stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing. NOW WHAT? Your seven action steps: 1.Lower the Stakes. Dont burden yourself by viewing everything you do at work as a referendum on how qualified you are to hold your current position. Instead reduce the emotional load of work by adopting a shorter-term perspective. 2.Ask Dumb Questions. Become an expert at forgetting the orthodoxies and accepted truths related to your work. Make it safe for others to question basic principles instead of feeling the need to demonstrate expertise. 3.Embrace the Hacker Mentality. Its OK to feel a little shame and discomfort with your work it can be a sign that youre taking the risk of getting your ideas to market more quickly. Let go of the need to feel pride in everything you do and youll end up with more work to be proud of. 4.Accept the Mess of Progress. Make it a habit for you and your people to share incomplete work as a way to create a corporate culture in which people feel safe producing the low-quality work that needs to be created on the way to excellence. 5.Start a Meaningful Journey with a Meaningless Map. Start making progress towards excellence today. Any plan will do the job of getting you started. Adjust your route while youre moving. 6.Embrace OK. As a leader, its important that you create a climate of acceptance and tolerance. Perfectionism crowds out completion, preventing the team from advancing toward important, ambitious outcomes. 7.Play Around. Once youve created a sense of purpose for yourself and your team and a climate of acceptance, lead short bursts of fun, playful exploration. 10 Jobs for Art History Majors
10 Jobs for Art History Majors 10 Jobs for Art History Majors Most people think of an art history major as a path to a job in a gallery or, if theyre cynical, as a path to unemployment. But there are several career paths and jobs open to art history majors, whether theyre into Giotto, Monet, or Thiebaud.Studying art history certainly helps develop an appreciation for art, but there are other broader skills it encourages and develops. Among those are analytical and critical skills and attention to detail, valuable assets in many fields. If a job directly related to art is a priority, consider these 10 jobs for art history majors: 01 Museum/Gallery CuratorThis, for many art history majors, is the target career. It typically requires a Ph.D. and extensive experience. A curator is at the top of the museum food chain, managing its collections of paintings, sculptures and other materials and artifacts. Most curators specialize in a particular area of art.Curators are typically responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with the museums board of directors, its customers, its staff, and others in the community with a vested interest in the museum. They may also be tasked with overseeing budgets and hiring (and firing) museum staff. Most curators work their way up to the top job over several years. 02 Art Conservation and RestorationJobs in this field involve maintaining older pieces of art that may be susceptible to damage and restoring works of art that already have sustained damage. Knowledge of art and artists is necessary to do good restoration work, and keeping up to date with the latest restoration techniques is important. 03 Museum Marketing and Public RelationsFor art history majors who also might have minored in communication (or vice versa), this job combines both skill sets. As with any public relations job, youll pitch stories about the museum to media and oversee marketing efforts. Chances are youll be involved with the creation of published materials such as the museums annual report and any appeals to donors, including the messaging. 04 Art Law and Law EnforcementOpportunities in this field are more limited than jobs as a curator, but for those with an interest in law enforcement, the FBI maintains a 16-member Art Crime Team, made up of specially trained agents who handle stolen art cases in a given geographic region. Agents are trained in art and cultural property investigations and oversee the National Stolen Art File, a database of stolen works of art.According to the FBI website, the Art Crime Team has recovered more than $165 million worth of stolen artwork since its inception in 2004. To pursue this career path you would first need to become an FBI agent. 05 Art ConsultantThis kind of work often is done on a contract basis. Instead of working for one hotel or corporation, someone might work for themselves, seeking out multiple businesses as clients. This kind of career requires extensive experience and knowledge of art, in order to suggest pieces to various clients that match their needs. This might include decorative or statement pieces, or works of art as investments. 06 Artist Management and RepresentationTo successfully represent and negotiate contracts, gallery shows and other fees for an artist, in addition to knowledge of art and artists and the marketplace, good business skills are a must. The person in this position typically handles business affairs for artists. A law background, while not totally necessary, would be a plus. 07 Museum Fundraising and DevelopmentSomewhat similar to marketing and public relations, this is a position that requires people with the skills to convince donors that a local museum is a good investment. They work with marketing to create campaigns and compile information used in annual reports and other fundraising materials. They may also work closely with the museums board of directors and meet with philanthropic organizations to create partnerships. 08 Special Events Planner for a Museum or Other Arts OrganizationEvent planning is a separate skill and a separate career, but someone with a background in art history can put that to use planning events for arts-based organizations. Usually, museums and arts organizations work with tight budgets, requiring some creativity when planning engaging, compelling events for potential donors and the community. 09 Art and Estate Appraisal for an Auction House or Private FirmThis career requires being certified in art appraisal studies, and good research skills also are a must. Many art appraisers specialize in a particular area, such as Impressionist art, sculpture or rare pieces, so learning a lot about a particular subject is a smart way to plan which art classes you may take. 10 Exhibit InstallationA bachelors degree often is sufficient for installation jobs, and some mechanical aptitude is helpful. This is a good opportunity to get experience in the field and spend time around others in the museum who may serve as mentors as you find your career path.
